What is a multiage classroom?

A multiage classroom is a classroom where of students in multiple grade levels are combined. Currently, at Franconia Elementary we are planning to have a multiage classroom combining first and second grade students. 

How is a multiage classroom similar to a first or second grade classroom?

This classroom instruction will provide both first and second curriculum, assessments, rules, and procedures. The classroom community will be built around Responsive Classroom philosophies and high expectations for all, just as all classrooms at Franconia Elementary. Each student’s needs will be met through a differentiated approach for all curricular areas, with social, emotional, and behavioral supports. Students will have many opportunities to collaborate with their peers. 

How is a multiage classroom different than a first or second grade classroom?

The multiage classroom will provide a different social grouping than what is established in a typical grade level classroom. The differentiated approach demands a broader scope to meet the needs of all children. There is a greater responsibility for students to work independently and collaboratively with peers. Students returning (as second graders) will be afforded immediate instruction while new students and first graders will spend more time on classroom procedures and routines. Second graders will have more opportunities as leaders and role models. 

How do you teach all that curriculum?  Are you teaching two grade levels?

Second grade language arts concepts build upon first grade curriculum, so the instructional level is determined by daily observation/assessments.  

Similarly in math, the curriculum mapping is very similar where concepts are introduced at the same time in both first and second grade. More specific grade-level concepts and standards will be taught in a small group setting.

What about science and Social Studies?

In the past, first grade and second grade classrooms have flexibly grouped students to include the multiage classrooms. This means students might attend their science and Social Studies lessons in another classroom with another teacher. However, we are flexible in this approach and will likely change routines throughout the school year. 

Is multiage appropriate for my child?

Multiage is suited for all types of learners on all levels! Cooperative learning and independent learning skills are helpful.

What assessments will these students participate in? 

• Students will participate in all assessments their respective grade level peers participate in.  
• All students will take the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA).
• The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) will be given to second graders in November. 
• The Naglieri NonVerbal Abilities Test (NNAT) will be given to 1st graders in March.
• All students will be assessed using tests, quizzes, anecdotal notes, projects, practical experiences, and work samples. 

How will students be graded? 

Students will be graded on specific grade-level standards of learning and traditional FCPS rubrics often seen on progress reports.

• 3 – Usually demonstrates
• 2 – Sometimes demonstrates
• 1 – Seldom demonstrates
• NA – Introduced but not assessed
• NT – Not taught

Other Information

Second graders naturally take on a mentor/leader type role social-emotionally. However, they will not be responsible for teaching material to first grader students. All students will have the opportunity to work in collaborative groups and partnerships.
