It is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure that we invite you to be our guest at our musical Beauty and the Beast, Jr.

Performances are May 1 and 2 and start at 6:30 in the gym.

Ticket information:

• Tickets are $5 each and are available to purchase through this myschoolbucks public link.
• Exact cash will be accepted at the door for anyone who does not have a ticket (the receipt).
• Checks can be made out to Franconia Elementary School.
• No other forms of payment will be accepted.

The enchanted doors open at 6:00 and we kindly request that you show our helpers your receipt upon entering the “castle,” then kindly find a chair anywhere in our gym.

The Franconia Penguin Talent Show

Franconia Elementary is proud to present the 2024 Penguin Talent Show.  If you are interested in auditioning for a spot in the show, you and a parent will need to read and agree to the guidelines on the audition form.

 

Audition Form

 

Fill out the form and return to Mrs. Yortzidis by April 26.

 

Filling out the form does not mean that your child will be in the talent show.  All students will audition and those that are selected will be notified.

School Auditions will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, during the school day.  Your child will audition during their specials time on that day.

Don't forget that this week is our spirit week for the Month of the Military Child. 

Additionally, be on the lookout for information inviting military-connected parents to help us recognize their students on April 26th, at 8:30am in the cafeteria.

We will provide light refreshments and donuts for our "Donuts with Dandelions" celebration to wrap up the Month of the Military Child.  You should find an invitation to this in your child's Wednesday folder.

 

 

A Note from PE

We are continuing with our dribbling with feet unit. For your students safety, please send them to school wearing sneakers or another type of athletic shoe. Please refrain from wearing crocs, slides, boots, and other footwear that would be unsafe. Thank you.

Congratulations to Band Students

On Saturday, April 13, at Poe Middle School in Annandale, 3 Franconia band students performed at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association Solo & Ensemble Festival.

We are pleased to report that ALL students received SUPERIOR ratings, the best that you can get!

• Phoebe Weinberg, Clarinet

We are all extremely proud of you for your hard work and attention to detail.  It really paid off and you represent Franconia as extraordinary music ambassadors!

 

 

Monday Munch 'Ems!

Welcome to Monday Munch ‘Ems! We are Sophia Lyon and Mira Stanish and we are 8th grade students at Mark Twain Middle School and Franconia Elementary Alumni.

During the month of April, on the Monday morning news, we will be sharing healthy, nutritious and super affordable snacks. We are Girl Scout Juliettes and this is part of our Silver Award Take Action project.

Autism Awareness Month

It’s Autism Awareness Month and our very own Ms. Lucius created a website where everyone can learn about Autism Spectrum Disorder. The website features those who may have had Autism in the past based on what we know about them and also showcases musicians and performers who have been diagnosed with Autism. Kindergarten Orientation

Do you have a child who will be 5 years of age by September 30, 2024, and do you plan on sending them to kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year?

We are in the process of preparing our kindergarten registration and orientation.  If your child is ready for kindergarten, call the school to set up a registration appointment.

 

Please consider joining us at school with your future kindergartener for our Kindergarten Orientation on Friday, April 26 from 5:30-6:30pm.

 

During this presentation, we will provide information about the kindergarten program at Franconia Elementary; while the future kindergarteners get to explore the classroom and participate in fun kindergarten activities.

Counselor Corner  Character Trait of the Month

The character trait for April is Responsibility - to do what’s expected in behavior and actions.

In March, we highlighted the character trait of Patience- to wait calmly without complaining.

SEL Screener Results

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) Screener during the month of March, providing updated information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions.

The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE.  For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Kindergarten Registration Is Now Open For SY 24-25

We look forward to welcoming our newest Penguins to Franconia Elementary for the 2024-25 School Year. Registration packets are available in the Franconia ES Main Office, or you may download the forms using the links below.

The registration requirements are as follows:

For incoming Kindergarten students – please visit https://www.fcps.edu/registration/kindergarten-registration

It is important that you have filled out all the paperwork, and bring with you the following:

1. Photo ID
2. Original Birth Certificate
3. Proof of Residency (Deed or Lease to your home)
4. Virginia Physical and Immunization Record (due prior to school starting in August)

When you are ready, and have gathered most of your documentation, please contact me to set up your registration appointment. All registrations are done by appointment only.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Do you have strong student engagement skills? Attend our instructional job fair on Saturday, April 27, 9 a.m.-noon, at Sandburg Middle School. Registration is required and must be completed by Thursday, April 25.

• Month of the Military Child - April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience. • National Arab American Heritage Month - FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

 

• Muslim American Heritage Month - Muslim American Heritage Month is a time for celebrating the history, contributions, culture, and an enhanced understanding of the diverse population of Muslim Americans. View the Fairfax County School Board resolution honoring Muslim American Heritage Month.

 

• School Library Month - In FCPS libraries, students develop knowledge and skills, experience a sense of belonging, find inspiration and support, and have the ability to freely pursue their personal interests and academic growth. Watch this video to learn how FCPS librarians make a difference.

 

• Autism Acceptance Month - April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. Our schools and staff play a vital role in creating and ensuring inclusive environments that accommodate and affirm autistic students.

 

• April 22, 23 - Passover and Half-O Days - Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. • April 24 - Theravada New Year (O Day) - In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration.

 

• Wednesday, April 24, is designated as an O day for Theravada New Year. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

Reporting an Absence or Change to Dismissal

Please remember to notify the school office of any of the following changes that come up for your child.

Notification should be made by 9:00am on the day of the change.

• Absence
• Late arrival
• Planned early pick-up or mid-day appointment (pick-up and return)
  • If your child needs to be picked up unexpectedly, please call the office (703-822-2200) in advance of your arrival.
  • This allows the office to contact your child’s teacher to prepare your child for their departure.
  • For early pick-ups between 3:00-3:15pm, please park on Kathmoor as the school buses start to arrive for dismissal at that time and the front parking lot will be off limits.  Pick-ups after 3:15 are not permitted as they are too close to dismissal time.

READ-A-THON UPDATE

Franconia families, Read-A-Thon ends Friday, April 19 - that is TODAY. That means there's still time for students to record their reading minutes.  Your penguins have been reading their hearts out and the race to win the class pizza party couldn't be closer.  Help your student's class as every reading minute counts.

Are you into Pokémon?  Do you want to get together with other Franconia Penguins to play Pokémon games and/or trade Pokémon cards?

If you answered "YES" to these questions, then keep reading!  Franconia will host a Pokémon after-school club on the following dates (all Fridays) from 3:30-4:30:

Students are invited to stay after school to enjoy all things Pokémon with their fellow students and some Franconia teachers.

 Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

 

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

 

Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

• Parents or guardians can initiate the screening process by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form to one of the Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AART) Mrs. Glines [email protected] or Mrs. Fouad [email protected] by April 30th
• .The AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form may be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs-aap/advanced-academic-program-aap-forms  or by searching “AAP Forms” at https://www.fcps.edu/.
• Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified by the local elementary school of their student’s eligibility status by early June.

 

Screening Process for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. • A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to support student learning and growth.

Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services at the elementary level:

 

Access to Rigor, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

• All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
• Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.

Because Access to Rigor services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

 

Subject Specific Advanced Differentiation, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Some students require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in at least one specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:

• Providing different assignments and resources in those subjects,
• Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness, and
• Providing additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.

Screening for full-time (level IV) AAP services happens at the district/central level rather than by local schools. For your planning for next school year, please know that screening for full-time (level IV) services occurs during two specific screening cycles:

• Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January. ο Fall referrals are due October 15, annually.
• Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student. ο The referral window is from the first day of school - December 15, annually.

Annual STEM activity fair for students of ALL AGES

 

Techstravaganza is a free, public, hands-on STEM activity fair for elementary and middle school students in Northern Virginia. In previous years, we've hosted more than 4,500 students and 70 labs presenting STEM activities. Our exhibitors range from TJHSST clubs and our own TWIST volunteers to organizations like NASA SCaN, Art of Problem Solving, George Mason University, American Society of Naval Engineers, and the National Air and Space Museum. This year, we will be holding the 20th annual Techstravaganza on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 10 AM to 4 PM at TJHSST.

• Autism Acceptance Month - April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. • April 22, 23 - Passover and Half-O Days - Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. • Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, are designated half-O days in recognition of the first two days of Passover. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days.

 

• April 24 - Theravada New Year (O Day) - In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration.

 

• Wednesday, April 24, is designated as an O day for Theravada New Year. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

Please remember to notify the school office of any of the following changes that come up for your child.

Notification should be made by 9:00am on the day of the change.

• Absence
• Late arrival
• Planned early pick-up or mid-day appointment (pick-up and return)
  • If your child needs to be picked up unexpectedly, please call the office (703-822-2200) in advance of your arrival
  • This allows the office to contact your child’s teacher to prepare your child for their departure
  • For early pick-ups after 3:00pm, please park on Kathmoor as the school buses start to arrive for dismissal at that time and the front parking lot will be off limits

Franconia Elementary is proud to present the 2024 Penguin Talent Show.  If you are interested in auditioning for a spot in the show, you and a parent will need to read and agree to the guidelines on this form.  Then fill out the permission slip, and return the form to Mrs. Yortzidis by April 26th.

Filling out a permission slip does not mean that your child will be in the talent show. That will be determined during auditions.

School Auditions will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 during the school day.  Your child will audition during their specials time on that day. We are looking for the BEST talent.  ARE YOU THE NEXT TOP TALENT?

We are in the process of preparing for our kindergarten registration and orientation.  If your child is ready for kindergarten, call the school so we may add you to our list of rising kindergarten students.

Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

•  April 7-13 - National Library Week - April is School Library Month and it's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. They support learning across all subject areas by teaching students the skills to be independent problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs. • April 17 - Purple Up! Day - To show our support for all our military-connected families, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 17  for military children. Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.

• April 24 - Theravada New Year (O Day) - In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration.

Wednesday, April 24, is designated as an O day for Theravada New Year. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

Please remember to notify the school office of any of the following changes that come up for your child.

Notification should be made by 9:00am on the day of the change.

• Absence
• Late arrival
• Planned early pick-up or mid-day appointment (pick-up and return)
  • If your child needs to be picked up unexpectedly, please call the office (703-822-2200) in advance of your arrival
  • This allows the office to contact your child’s teacher to prepare your child for their departure
  • For early pick-ups after 3:00pm, please park on Kathmoor as the school buses start to arrive for dismissal at that time and the front parking lot will be off limits

  Kindergarten Orientation

Do you have a child who will be 5 years of age by September 30, 2024, and do you plan on sending them to kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year?

We are in the process of preparing for our kindergarten registration and orientation.  If your child is ready for kindergarten, call the school so we may add you to our list of rising kindergarten students.

Please consider joining us at school with your future kindergartener for our Kindergarten Orientation on Friday, April 26. 2024 from 5:30pm-6:30pm.   During this presentation, we will provide information about the Kindergarten program at Franconia Elementary; while the future kindergarteners get to explore the classroom and participate in fun kindergarten activities.

Our school Read-A-Thon begins today, Wednesday, April 3rd and concludes on Friday, April 19th. It is sure to be an exciting event with many opportunities for our young readers to win fun prizes.

   Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

 

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

 

Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

• Parents or guardians can initiate the screening process by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form to one of the Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AART) Mrs. Glines [email protected] or Mrs. Fouad [email protected] by April 30th
• .The AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form may be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs-aap/advanced-academic-program-aap-forms  or by searching “AAP Forms” at https://www.fcps.edu/.
• Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified by the local elementary school of their student’s eligibility status by early June.

 

Screening Process for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

 

Appeals Process for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

If a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher or Assistant Principal.

 

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services Overview

 

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services in Elementary School

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach allows for a focus on matching services to students’ needs rather than labeling students. Students have:

• Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
• A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to support student learning and growth.

Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services at the elementary level:

 

Access to Rigor, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

• All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
• Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.

Because Access to Rigor services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

 

Subject Specific Advanced Differentiation, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Some students require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in at least one specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:

• Providing different assignments and resources in those subjects,
• Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness, and
• Providing additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.

Student needs for subject specific differentiation are re-evaluated each year at the local school.

 

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Some students have advanced academic abilities in multiple subject areas and require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in multiple content areas.

• Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.
• Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.

Part-time services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

 

Screening for Full-Time (Level IV) Services

 

Screening Timeline for Full-Time Services

Screening for full-time (level IV) AAP services happens at the district/central level rather than by local schools. For your planning for next school year, please know that screening for full-time (level IV) services occurs during two specific screening cycles:

• Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January. ο Fall referrals are due October 15, annually.
• Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student. ο The referral window is from the first day of school - December 15, annually.

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV)

Some advanced learners need a full-time advanced academic program with differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science).

Students eligible for full-time AAP services are cluster grouped on a full-time basis and receive:

• Full-time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and
• Curriculum that is differentiated through acceleration, depth, and complexity of content.

Full-time services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

• National Arab American Heritage Month - FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. • Autism Acceptance Month - April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. •  April 7-13 - National Library Week - April is School Library Month and it's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. They support learning across all subject areas by teaching students the skills to be independent problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs. • April 9, 10 - Eid al-Fitr (Half-O Day, Holiday)In Islam, Eid-al-Fitr is a three day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims dress in new clothes, give charity, and pray in congregation.    World Down Syndrome Day is March 21st! 

Since 2012, March 21st has signified a day the world comes together to celebrate, advocate, and educate about Down Syndrome. As a school community we plan to CELEBRATE this special day!  The National Down Syndrome Society celebrates this day by MOVING for 3.21.  During specials on this day, FES students will be able to run, walk, dance, cartwheel, MOVE for 3.21 minutes, miles, reps, etc.!

 

On Thursday, 3/21, students can show their support by:

• Wearing Blue and Yellow: Down Syndrome Awareness Colors

• Wear sneakers.
• Rock your Socks!: wear mismatched socks (as socks look like the shape of chromosomes) to show their celebration of the Down Syndrome Community.

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong.    Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

 

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

 

Screening for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

• Parents or guardians can initiate the screening process by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form to one of the Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AART) Mrs. Glines [email protected] or Mrs. Fouad [email protected] by April 30th
• .The AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form may be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs-aap/advanced-academic-program-aap-forms  or by searching “AAP Forms” at https://www.fcps.edu/.
• Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified by the local elementary school of their student’s eligibility status by early June.

 

Screening Process for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

 

Appeals Process for Subject Specific (Level II) and Part-Time (Level III) Services

If a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher or Assistant Principal.

 

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services Overview

 

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services in Elementary School

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach allows for a focus on matching services to students’ needs rather than labeling students. Students have:

• Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
• A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to support student learning and growth.

Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services at the elementary level:

 

Access to Rigor, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

• All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
• Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.

Because Access to Rigor services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

 

Subject Specific Advanced Differentiation, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Some students require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in at least one specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:

• Providing different assignments and resources in those subjects,
• Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness, and
• Providing additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.

Student needs for subject specific differentiation are re-evaluated each year at the local school.

 

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Some students have advanced academic abilities in multiple subject areas and require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in multiple content areas.

• Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.
• Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.

Part-time services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

 

Screening for Full-Time (Level IV) Services

 

Screening Timeline for Full-Time Services

Screening for full-time (level IV) AAP services happens at the district/central level rather than by local schools. For your planning for next school year, please know that screening for full-time (level IV) services occurs during two specific screening cycles:

• Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January. ο Fall referrals are due October 15, annually.
• Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student. ο The referral window is from the first day of school - December 15, annually.

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV)

Some advanced learners need a full-time advanced academic program with differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science).

Students eligible for full-time AAP services are cluster grouped on a full-time basis and receive:

• Full-time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and
• Curriculum that is differentiated through acceleration, depth, and complexity of content.

Full-time services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

 

  Kindergarten Orientation

Do you have a child who will be 5 years of age by September 30, 2024, and do you plan on sending them to kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year?

We are in the process of preparing for our kindergarten registration and orientation.  If your child is ready for kindergarten, call the school so we may add you to our list of rising kindergarten students.

Please consider joining us at school with your future kindergartener for our Kindergarten Orientation on Friday, April 26. 2024 from 5:30pm-6:30pm.   During this presentation, we will provide information about the Kindergarten program at Franconia Elementary; while the future kindergarteners get to explore the classroom and participate in fun kindergarten activities.

Go Fish - the Musical

Attention all Kindergarten and 1st Grade Families:

Your child will be in a mini-musical Go Fish! Ms. Lucius is auditioning students this week and next week and will send home scripts for those who have lines. The musical involves ALL students and rehearsals are during their music classes. During this process, students will learn to become “triple threats” by singing, dancing and acting all at the same time!

All friends and families are encourage to save the dates:

  Reporting an Absence or Change to Dismissal

Please remember to notify the school office of any of the following changes that come up for your child.

Notification should be made by 9:00am on the day of the change.

• Absence
• Late arrival
• Planned early pick-up or mid-day appointment (pick-up and return)
  • If your child needs to be picked up unexpectedly, please call the office (703-822-2200) in advance of your arrival
  • This allows the office to contact your child’s teacher to prepare your child for their departure
  • For early pick-ups after 3:00pm, please park on Kathmoor as the school buses start to arrive for dismissal at that time and the front parking lot will be off limits

Penguins Perform at the Area Band Concert

 

Last night 13 Franconia students performed on the stage of John Lewis High School as members of the 106 member-strong 2024 Greater Springfield-Franconia Area Honor Band!  These students had been preparing this concert with other schools in the Lewis and Edison pyramid since early January.  We are extremely proud of their excellent musical performance and representation of Franconia!

  World Showcase Spirit Week March 18th to 22nd  

We are excited to celebrate our rich cultural diversity at Franconia during World Showcase Week, March 18th to 22nd!

Our own Strings Teacher, Mr. Johnson, organized an elementary orchestra concert for the Edison Pyramid last night. 100 students participated, including several from Franconia! 

   World Down Syndrome Day is March 21st! 

Since 2012, March 21st has signified a day the world comes together to celebrate, advocate, and educate about Down Syndrome. As a school community we plan to CELEBRATE this special day!  The National Down Syndrome Society celebrates this day by MOVING for 3.21.  During specials on this day, FES students will be able to run, walk, dance, cartwheel, MOVE for 3.21 minutes, miles, reps, etc.!

 

On Thursday, 3/21, students can show their support by:

• Wearing Blue and Yellow: Down Syndrome Awareness Colors

• Wear sneakers.
• Rock your Socks!: wear mismatched socks (as socks look like the shape of chromosomes) to show their celebration of the Down Syndrome Community.

Please remember to notify the school office of any of the following changes that come up for your child.

Notification should be made by 9:00am on the day of the change.

• Planned early pick-up or mid-day appointment (pick-up and return)

  • This allows the office to contact your child’s teacher to prepare your child for their departure

Suffrage is the right to vote, and people who fought for women’s right to vote were called suffragettes. People wore yellow to support women’s suffrage, and women were finally given the right to vote on August 18, 1920.

All students and staff will get a yellow ribbon with a pin to honor those who fought for women’s right to vote!

 

Tuesday, March 12, Fierce Friendships

Did you know that strong friendships not only make you happier, they also make you HEALTHIER! The health benefits of close friendships are especially strong in women.

All students and staff will get a friendship bracelet to tie us together in friendship.

 

Wednesday, March 13, Trailblazers in Trousers

In the early 1900s women could be arrested for wearing pants! The right to wear pants is just one of the many rights given to women in the 1900s.

Thursday, March 14, Powerful Purple

Purple has been used to represent the women’s movement for centuries. The National Woman’s Party published "Purple is the colour of loyalty, constancy to purpose, unswerving steadfastness to a cause." in 1913. Today, purple is the color of international women’s day.

Wear purple to honor those who fought for women’s rights!

 

Friday, March 15, Career Day

Throughout history, women were denied education and banned from certain careers. Let’s celebrate access to education and promote career equality!

 World Down Syndrome Day is March 21st! 

Since 2012, March 21st has signified a day the world comes together to celebrate, advocate, and educate about Down Syndrome. As a school community we plan to CELEBRATE this special day!  The National Down Syndrome Society celebrates this day by MOVING for 3.21.  During specials on this day, FES students will be able to run, walk, dance, cartwheel, MOVE for 3.21 minutes, miles, reps, etc.!

 

On Thursday, 3/21, students can show their support by:

• Wearing Blue and Yellow: Down Syndrome Awareness Colors

• Wear sneakers.
• Rock your Socks!: wear mismatched socks (as socks look like the shape of chromosomes) to show their celebration of the Down Syndrome Community.

Go Fish - the Musical

Attention all Kindergarten and 1st Grade Families:

Your child will be in a mini-musical Go Fish! Ms. Lucius is auditioning students this week and next week and will send home scripts for those who have lines. The musical involves ALL students and rehearsals are during their music classes. During this process, students will learn to become “triple threats” by singing, dancing and acting all at the same time!

All friends and families are encourage to save the dates:

1st Grade performance: May 21 from 9:10 – 10:10 in the Franconia Gym/Stage

Kindergarten performance: May 22 from 11:10 – 12:10 in the Franconia Gym/Stage

Kindergarten Orientation

Do you have a child who will be 5 years of age by September 30, 2024, and do you plan on sending them to kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year?

We are in the process of preparing for our kindergarten registration and orientation.  If your child is ready for kindergarten, call the school so we may add you to our list of rising kindergarten students.

Please consider joining us at school with your future kindergartener for our Kindergarten Orientation on Friday, April 26. 2024.  During this presentation, we will provide information about the Kindergarten program at Franconia Elementary; while the future kindergarteners get to explore the classroom and participate in fun kindergarten activities.

We look forward to welcoming our newest Penguins to Franconia Elementary for the 2024-25 School Year. Registration packets are available in the Franconia ES Main Office, or you may download the forms using the links below.

The registration requirements are as follows:

It is important that you have filled out all the paperwork, and bring with you the following:

1. Photo ID
2. Original Birth Certificate
3. Proof of Residency (Deed or Lease to your home)
4. Virginia Physical and Immunization Record (due prior to school starting in August)

Students and staff alike have enjoyed exploring and celebrating the lives and contributions of African Americans during Black History Month.

   Trends in the Drug Culture Parent Only Presentation, Tomorrow Night

 

Many challenges and responsibilities come with being a parent, and having to address a difficult topic with your child, such as drug culture, trends and identifying signs of substance use, can be stressful. Drugs and drug paraphernalia is now being disguised as common everyday items out in plain sight, to go unrecognized by parents or other adults.  Substance Abuse Prevention Program want to provide you with information so you will be able to recognize drugs and drug paraphernalia and also the signs of drug use to equip you to have real and meaningful dialog with your child concerning these issues. 

Join us on February 29th, 2024 @ 6:00pm at Edison High School where we will be hosting a parent presentation to provide information on the trends in drug culture. After the presentation there will be time to ask questions or to receive more information. The trends in drug culture have created innovative ways to hook your child and we are here to arm you by providing information concerning these topics that will assist in effective communication with your child.  Also, a Narcan Training with be provided by a member of the Community Services Board.

Franconia Elementary will be holding a World Showcase Day Program on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at 2pm.  We are looking for students who are willing to walk the red carpet and model their culture-based outfits at the World Showcase Assembly.  Interested students must have a signed form and a completed description on the origin of the outfit and any additional information about the outfit.  Filling out this form confirms that you will be in the Fashion Show.  Please return this form to Mrs. Yortzidis by March 4th.

Kindergarten Registration Is Now Open For SY 24-25

 

We look forward to welcoming our newest Penguins to Franconia Elementary for the 2024-25 School Year. Registration packets are available in the Franconia ES Main Office, or you may download the forms using the links below.

The registration requirements are as follows:

It is important that you have filled out all the paperwork, and bring with you the following:

1. Photo ID
2. Original Birth Certificate
3. Proof of Residency (Deed or Lease to your home)

Please remember to notify the school office of any of the following changes that come up for your child.

Notification should be made by 9:00am on the day of the change.

• Absence
• Late arrival
• Planned early pick-up or mid-day appointment (pick-up and return)
  • If your child needs to be picked up unexpectedly, please call the office (703-822-2200) in advance of your arrival
  • This allows the office to contact your child’s teacher to prepare your child for their departure
  • For early pick-ups after 3:00pm, please park on Kathmoor as the school buses start to arrive for dismissal at that time and the front parking lot will be off limits

   Trends in the Drug Culture Parent only Presentation, February 29, 2024 

 

Many challenges and responsibilities come with being a parent, and having to address a difficult topic with your child, such as drug culture, trends and identifying signs of substance use, can be stressful. Drugs and drug paraphernalia is now being disguised as common everyday items out in plain sight, to go unrecognized by parents or other adults.  Substance Abuse Prevention Program want to provide you with information so you will be able to recognize drugs and drug paraphernalia and also the signs of drug use to equip you to have real and meaningful dialog with your child concerning these issues. 

Join us on February 29th, 2024 @ 6:00pm at Edison High School where we will be hosting a parent presentation to provide information on the trends in drug culture. After the presentation there will be time to ask questions or to receive more information. The trends in drug culture have created innovative ways to hook your child and we are here to arm you by providing information concerning these topics that will assist in effective communication with your child.  Also, a Narcan Training with be provided by a member of the Community Services Board.

There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:

1. Determine eligibility. 
2. Identify your local school. 
3. Gather documents.

5. Schedule an appointment.

Franconia Elementary School will be hosting a Career Day entitled “Oh the Places You’ll Go” inspired by Dr. Seuss.  The event will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024, from 9:10-10:40 ( inclement weather: Friday, March 22, 2024- same time).

 

On Career Day,  you are invited to come and share with our students about your career and the importance of staying in school.  If you are a person who has a career that will interest K-6 students and enjoys enthusiastically speaking in front of children, then we need you! • March 3-9 - National School Social Work Week - March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. • March 4-8 - National School Breakfast Week - National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) celebrates the importance of a nutritious school breakfast in fueling students for success.

Please remember to notify the school office of any of the following changes that come up for your child.

Notification should be made by 9:00am on the day of the change.

• Absence
• Late arrival
• Planned early pick-up or mid-day appointment (pick-up and return)
  • If your child needs to be picked up unexpectedly, please call the office (703-822-2200) in advance of your arrival
  • This allows the office to contact your child’s teacher to prepare your child for their departure
  • For early pick-ups after 3:00pm, please park on Kathmoor as the school buses start to arrive for dismissal at that time and the front parking lot will be off limits

February Reading BINGO!

Keep an eye out for a February Reading BINGO board coming home with library books. This a chance for students to explore the celebrations of February through reading. The BINGO board includes books for Black History Month, Chinese New Year, President’s Day, and more! Students who complete a BINGO get a shout-out on the school news, and students who complete the whole board get lunch in the library. More information is on the BINGO papers that students will bring home this week. Students can turn their completed BINGO papers in at the library and get extra papers if they need.   World Showcase Day

  World Showcase Day Fashion Show Walk the Red Carpet in Fashion!

 

Franconia Elementary will be holding a World Showcase Day Program on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at 2pm.  We are looking for students who are willing to walk the red carpet and model their culture-based outfits at the World Showcase Assembly.  Interested students must have a signed form and a completed description on the origin of the outfit and any additional information about the outfit.  Filling out this form confirms that you will be in the Fashion Show.  Please return this form to Mrs. Yortzidis by March 4th.

  Kindergarten Orientation

Do you have a child who will be 5 years of age by September 30, 2024, and do you plan on sending them to kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year?

We are in the process of preparing for our kindergarten registration and orientation.  If your child is ready for kindergarten, call the school so we may add you to our list of rising kindergarten students.

Please consider joining us at school with your future kindergartener for our Kindergarten Orientation - date TBD.  During this presentation, we will provide information about the Kindergarten program at Franconia Elementary; while the future kindergarteners get to explore the classroom and participate in fun kindergarten activities.

Franconia Elementary School will be hosting a Career Day entitled “Oh the Places You’ll Go” inspired by Dr. Seuss.  The event will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024, from 9:10-10:40 ( inclement weather: Friday, March 22, 2024- same time).

 

On Career Day,  you are invited to come and share with our students about your career and the importance of staying in school.  If you are a person who has a career that will interest K-6 students and enjoys enthusiastically speaking in front of children, then we need you! February Guidance Topics

This month,  all grade levels except for 5th grade will be learning about how to calm strong/big emotions. Fifth grade will begin their lessons on strong emotions soon, but for now we will conclude our lessons on conflict by discussing I-messages.

 

Character Trait of the Month

The character trait for February is Empathy- A feeling or understanding of what someone else is feeling.

In January, we highlighted the character trait of Acceptance- Including and respecting everyone regardless of beliefs, race, gender, religion, etc...

  National School Counseling Week We Celebrate Mrs. Guillion

February 5-9 is National School Counseling Week, highlighting the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve success.  Our own Mrs. Guillion works closely with school staff to support student success through classroom guidance lessons, small group counseling, consultation, referral, and crisis response. Additionally, she is the cornerstone of our Character trait of the Month and Mindfulness Lab programs.

Fourth grade families met up at The National Museum of the United States Army to coincide with their historical fiction unit. Students experienced living history through interactive displays and learned more about the Revolutionary War, World War II, and the Cold War.

  Volunteer for Career Day

Franconia Elementary School will be hosting a Career Day entitled “Oh the Places You’ll Go” inspired by Dr. Seuss.  The event will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024, from 9:10-10:40 ( inclement weather: Friday, March 22, 2024- same time).

 

On Career Day,  you are invited to come and share with our students about your career and the importance of staying in school.  If you are a person who has a career that will interest K-6 students and enjoys enthusiastically speaking in front of children, then we need you!   Spring SEL Screener

Hello families,

 

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-6 during the window of February 26th- March 15th. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link:

February 5-9 - National School Counseling Week

February 5-9 is National School Counseling Week, and highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for a career.School counselors work with students in a variety of different capacities, whether it is through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling. February 10 - Lunar New Year (Falls on a weekend this year)

The Lunar New Year is a holiday that marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, which is the calendar traditionally used in many east Asian countries including China, Vietnam, Singapore, and South Korea. In these and other Asian countries, it is one of the most important holidays of the year. February 14 - Ash Wednesday

  Reporting an Absence or Change to Dismissal

Please remember to notify the school office of any of the following changes that come up for your child.

Notification should be made by 9:00am on the day of the change.

• Absence
• Late arrival
• Planned early pick-up or mid-day appointment (pick-up and return)
  • If your child needs to be picked up unexpectedly, please call the office (703-822-2200) in advance of your arrival
  • This allows the office to contact your child’s teacher to prepare your child for their departure
  • For early pick-ups after 3:00pm, please park on Kathmoor as the school buses start to arrive for dismissal at that time and the front parking lot will be off limits

February Reading BINGO!

Keep an eye out for a February Reading BINGO board coming home with library books. This a chance for students to explore the celebrations of February through reading. The BINGO board includes books for Black History Month, Chinese New Year, President’s Day, and more! Students who complete a BINGO get a shout-out on the school news, and students who complete the whole board get lunch in the library. More information is on the BINGO papers that students will bring home this week. Students can turn their completed BINGO papers in at the library and get extra papers if they need.   Edison Pyramid Concerts   Franconia Musicians Perform

On January 25th the inaugural Edison Pyramid Band concert was held, and it was AMAZING!  Over 130 students participated, including our own Franconia Penguins along with musicians from Edison, Twain, Springfield Estates, Clermont, Bush Hill, and Rose Hill!

 

  Our Chorus Performed as well

Not to be outdone, our Franconia Penguin Chorus performed at their own Pyramid Concert.  They sang two songs solo and joined their peers from Edison HS, Twain MS, Springfield Estates, Clermont, Cameron, Bush Hill, Rose Hill and Mount Eagle to sing a third. By all accounts, they were wonderful!

  World Showcase Day

When: Wednesday, March 20th

  Calling all Pokémon Lovers..

Quarter End, Early Release, and Student Holiday

 

Tomorrow, is the last day of the quarter and a two-hour early release for students. Franconia will dismiss at 1:30 on Thursday, January 25.  Schools are closed for students on Friday, January 26, for a teacher work day.

Are you in to Pokemon?  Do you want to get together with other Franconia Penguins to play Pokemon games and/or trade Pokemon cards?  If you answered "YES" to these questions, then keep reading!  On the following Fridays, Feb. 2nd, Feb. 9th, Feb. 16th, Feb. 23, March 1st and March 8th, from 3:30-4:30, Franconia will host a Pokemon after school club. Students are invited to stay after school to enjoy all things Pokemon with their fellow students and some Franconia teachers.

Penguin Winter Wonderland Dance DEADLINE FOR PERMISSION SLIP AND PAYMENT IS TOMORROW 1/25/2024

 8th Annual Art Supply Drive Sponsored by the Franconia Student Council Association

For the eighth year in a row, the Franconia SCA is teaming up with Paint the Globe Foundation to provide school and art supplies for kids in need across the globe.  Paint the Globe Foundation is currently working on a campaign in Kigali, Rwanda to build a pre-K art center. All items donated will be delivered to this center to allow students to use art for creative, educational, and therapeutic endeavors.

  Volunteer for Career Day

Franconia Elementary School will be hosting a Career Day entitled “Oh the Places You’ll Go” inspired by Dr. Seuss.  The event will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024, from 9:10-10:40 ( inclement weather: Friday, March 22, 2024- same time).

 

On Career Day,  you are invited to come and share with our students about your career and the importance of staying in school.  If you are a person who has a career that will interest K-6 students and enjoys enthusiastically speaking in front of children, then we need you! If interested, please complete the Google Form HERE. The last day to submit your interest is by February 16, 2024.  Inclement Weather Plan Update

 

As mentioned in Superintendent Reid’s Weekly Reflections, FCPS will not have virtual learning when school is closed due to inclement weather for the 2023-24 school year.

Eleven snow days are built into our existing calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will enable us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services. 

You are encouraged to share ideas for learning about winter that students can use during winter break and snow days. Email ideas to [email protected].  

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Dual Language Immersion Programs

Registration for the countywide lottery for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs will open on Monday, January 22. Current pre-K students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program, and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2024-25 school year. Programs are available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. 

Parents/caregivers who are interested may want to attend an informational meeting. Meetings are held at the school site. Check the FCPS events calendar for updated information. Meetings will begin on Tuesday, January 16. 

One virtual meeting hosted by the World Languages Office will include general program information. Access to this virtual meeting will be made available on the FCPS events calendar and the Dual Language Immersion registration site on the day of the meeting.

Character Trait of the Month

 

The character trait for January is Acceptance - Including and respecting everyone regardless of beliefs, race, gender, religion, etc...

In December, we highlighted the character trait of Generosity - To share and give to others.

 Inclement Weather Plan Update

 

As mentioned in Superintendent Reid’s Weekly Reflections, FCPS will not have virtual learning when school is closed due to inclement weather for the 2023-24 school year.

Eleven snow days are built into our existing calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will enable us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services. 

You are encouraged to share ideas for learning about winter that students can use during winter break and snow days. Email ideas to [email protected].  

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

• Elementary school instruction: Red Apple 21
• Middle school instruction: Channel 25
• High school instruction: Channel 99

 

Calendar Reminders

 

• Orthodox Epiphany

In the Orthodox church, Epiphany is celebrated on January 19 and commemorates the baptism of Jesus rather than the arrival of the Magi. It is believed that Christ's baptism by John the Forerunner (John the Baptist) in the River Jordan began Christ's ministry on earth and revealed the Holy Trinity of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to mankind.

The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

 

• 25,26 *Quarter End, Early Release and Student holiday/Teacher Work Day

Thursday, January 25, is the last day of the quarter and a two-hour early release for students. Also, schools are closed for students on Friday, January 26, for a teacher work day.

  Reporting an Absence or Change to Dismissal

Please remember to notify the school office of any of the following changes that come up for your child.

Notification should be made by 9:00am on the day of the change.

• Absence
• Late arrival
• Planned early pick-up or mid-day appointment (pick-up and return)
  • If your child needs to be picked up unexpectedly, please call the office (703-822-2200) in advance of your arrival
  • This allows the office to contact your child’s teacher to prepare your child for their departure
  • For early pick-ups after 3:00pm, please park on Kathmoor as the school buses start to arrive for dismissal at that time and the front parking lot will be off limits

Please do this IN ADDITION to contacting your child's teacher.  There could be times when the teacher is absent and, by also contacting the office, the information will be properly noted.
