Update on Potential Changes to Middle School Start Times

Earlier this month, at a School Board work session, staff from Prismatic Services, Inc. presented options for adjusting start times at FCPS middle schools. As a reminder, Prismatic is charged with developing an action plan to help the School Board reach its goal of starting middle school at or after 8 a.m.

The presentation includes five options for adjusting middle school start times based on the consultant’s analysis from community forums, surveys, and interviews with staff, parents, associations, and other groups. The School Board will provide next steps to the superintendent.

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.

By enrolling in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) course or program, students learn the technical applications of many occupations while preparing for higher education or entry-level employment. A core program of CTE courses is offered in every middle and high school. Based on the needs of the populations served, each school determines optional courses to be offered. This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.

Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.

Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

Calendar Reminders

November
  • National Career Development Month

By enrolling in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) course or program, students learn the technical applications of many occupations while preparing for higher education or entry-level employment. A core program of CTE courses is offered in every middle and high school. Based on the needs of the populations served, each school determines optional courses to be offered. Learn more about Academies and Specialized Programs.

  • Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

  • National Family Engagement Month

This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

If you have questions or would like more information, ask your school office to connect you with your family liaison or visit FCPS’ website for a list of region representatives

 Federal Impact Aid

Please Complete Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is eligible for federal Impact Aid grants due to the federal presence in our area. The grants from these programs will become part of FCPS' general operating budget. They are critical to ensuring that students receive an excellent education. FCPS anticipates receiving approximately $3,000,000 in Impact Aid funds.

FCPS uses the survey for Federal Impact Aid to identify federally connected students. In October, the survey will be made available to FCPS families. The survey is available online through ParentVue. Families without ParentVUE can request a paper copy of the survey from their child's school. FCPS staff will process the information with the utmost confidentiality.

Below are the visual steps for a parent to get to the survey in SIS ParentVue.

Steps to Access the Survey in ParentVue

Step 1: Log into SIS ParentVue

Step 2: Select the 'Online Packets' tab

Step 3: From the tiles at the bottom of the page, select the '2024-2025 Federal

Impact Aid Survey'

Use of Impact Aid Funds

Federal Impact Aid provides revenue to local education agencies to mitigate costs of educating children in areas impacted by federal activity. The Impact Aid policy was designed to compensate local school districts for the local funding share that is reduced or eliminated because of a Federal presence that is not taxable.  School districts with federal lands, military installations, federal low-rent housing or Indian Trust land within their boundaries lose local revenues.  Impact Aid is designed to compensate school districts for this lost revenue. Impact Aid goes into the general fund and is intended to offset the costs (e.g. staff, facilities, and transportation) associated with educating military dependent children and other special groups.

Hayfield Secondary School Fundraiser for ANGP

Hayfield Secondary's Class of 2025 All Night Grad Party (ANGP) is looking for YOUR generous SUPPORT!

For several years now, the ANGP has offered Hayfield's graduating seniors a FUN and SAFE drug/alcohol/smoke free event to acknowledge their recent milestone and to give them one last opportunity to celebrate together with their classmates.  The CO 2025 ANGP will be held again at The St. James in Springfield, VA and we have tons of fun things planned for our graduates!

To help make this happen, our ANGP committee, along with the seniors and their parents, plans many fundraising opportunities throughout the year.  You may have supported us in the past by visiting our annual craft fair in the spring!  Thank you...there will be another one in spring 2025!

One of our biggest fundraising events this year is our Double Good Popcorn sale!  There are two ways YOU can help our graduating seniors!

  1. Connect with a Hayfield senior that you know and buy your popcorn directly from their personal store.  Each student has their own link.
  2. If you don't know a senior, you can purchase your popcorn from the ANGP store link: https://popup.doublegood.com/s/l0qoc822

Please note, this event lasts only 4 days: from 9PM on Thursday, October 17th until 9PM on Monday, October 21st.  All sales are completed online and the popcorn is shipped directly to you!  Best of all, the ANGP gets 50% of ALL SALES!

This year's goal is to sell over $50,000 of popcorn so we NEED your support!

If popcorn isn't your thing BUT you still want to support the Class of 2025 ANGP, visit our store link to offer a donation!  https://hayfield-senior-celebration.square.site/

Thank YOU in advance for your support!

Social and Emotional (SEL) Screener

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. In FCPS, students use a tool called the SEL Screener to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school. Franconia students in grades 3-6 will be participating in the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in the Fall and Spring.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. Parents/guardians may request that their student not participate in the SEL Screener on an annual basis. They can do this via the Parent Digital Consent System OR by completing the Fairfax County Social Emotional Learning Screener Opt-Out Request Form and returning it to the student’s teacher or counselor.  For more information about the SEL Screener including information on opting out please see the Parent Notification Letter.  You can also learn more on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

2024 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30

You can submit questions online regarding the SR&R

The Penguin Way

Just as penguins work together as a colony, supporting and caring for one another, we believe our school community should be a place where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.

The Penguin Way is all about being inclusive and kind. It means treating everyone with respect, regardless of their differences. It means creating a welcoming environment where every student feels like they belong. It means being a friend to all, offering a helping hand, and celebrating our diversity.

This week, we focused on INCLUSIVITY at Franconia. We encourage you to use the following resources to talk with your child about the importance of being inclusive inside and outside of school!

Books- The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig, The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi, It’s Okay to be Different by Todd Parr

Video- Inclusion makes the world more vibrant

Conversation Starters: What is something interesting you learned about a fellow penguin you met this week? How did you learn it?

News from P.E.

Welcome back to school and hope your school year is off to a fast and hot start. We just wanted to remind you that in PE we should come wearing the appropriate footwear. Closed toed athletic shoes will allow you to get the best out of the activities we do in PE and will reduce the risk of injury. Some activities we do are not allowed if you do not have the proper footwear for safety reasons. We also ask that your child/children attend PE with a water bottle as that will allow them to stay hydrated while in PE. We do have water fountains in the gym but those can result in traffic jams pretty quickly so a whereas a water bottle would allow for quick access to water on their own time. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Mr. Harris or Mr. Worst.

Students in Mrs. Octaviano's second grade class learned the importance of being kind, especially with their words. The message for this lesson was, “Before you speak, think and be smart, it’s hard to med a wrinkled heart.”
